How not to get your bag pilfered or stolen?
There are two stages when your bag could get pilfered or stolen. In your possession, or when you send them away for transportation.
When they are in your possession, you must keep them as close to you as possible. Simply watch them continuously. Thieves grab any opportunity they see, and they do it fast.
Locking the bags might help, though please note that a zipper could be opened and closed with a single pen without showing any sign, even if you have a padlock on. So, using a proper lock and a strap (lockable strap) is a step to keep your valuables with you. Then again, look after your belongings.
Mark out your bag from the crowd. Thieves do not like easily recognisable targets, so make it harder for them. Unusual colours, personal markings may help. Also, avoid putting valuables in your checked baggage. Everyone should know it by know. Or not? Again, never place your valuables in your checked baggage.
Sometimes, you are asked to hand over your cabin bag to be placed in the hold. That is fine, the airline may do it. However, you are not required to leave any valuables in those bags. You can remove them before they are taken from you. Remember, passport, money, jewelleries, keys, computers and so on must go with you.
After arrival, proceed to the carousel as soon as possible to watch the delivery of your luggage. Be vigilant and notice everything that may be unusual. Most of your fellow passengers would recognise their luggage. Anyone jumping and repeatedly checking on them would raise the alarm bell.
